“Although not as layered and sophisticated as their subsequent records, The Affectionate Punch benefits from multi-instrumentalist Alan Rankine’s superb musicianship, his arrangements perfectly matching Billy MacKenzie’s spectral voice. I always saw this album as a “dandy” version of The Cure’s 17 Seconds, not a coincidence that Michael Dempsey went to play bass with the Associates and Robert Smith sings backing vocals on one song.”
